Ascriptions of migration: Racism, migratism and Brexit

This article offers an analysis of scholarly attempts to make sense the nexus race and migration in Brexit-era UK discourse. To illustrate my arguments that intend challenge extend existing scholarship, I discuss exemplary snapshots from news articles, blog posts social media sources. Building on critical postcolonial studies as theoretical background, trace phenomenon naming discrimination against East Europeans – which is undeniably one driving forces Brexit discussion ‘racism’. Sometimes, this shows pattern overgeneralization term, ‘racism’ gets extended name post-Brexit exclusion any EU nationals. use ‘racism’, however, based methodological nationalism conceptual whiteness analyses show. overlapping racist, anti-immigration anti-EU rhetoric marks pre- moment United Kingdom, introduces concept ‘migratism’ a for power relation ascribes certain people, constructing them migrants discriminating them. The terms ‘migratization’ function grammatically analogue way ‘racialization’. If racism racializes (=ascribes to) migratism if migratizes people. are not symmetrical but have complicated interdependent relationship.
